First Grade Overview

First grade is a fun year full of varied activities! In Religion, the children focus on developing their relationship with Jesus. Religion also includes Family Life, the “Don’t Laugh at Me” program, and the monthly Values series. In Reading, basic literacy is developed along with comprehension skills, and applied in writing short compositions. Addition and subtraction are the main focus in Mathematics, also counting coins to $1.00 and telling time to 5 minute intervals. Our Science area comprises life science, earth science, and the human body.  Map reading, cultural awareness, and linking past to present are the major Social Studies areas.  Other subjects in the curriculum include Music, Art, Physical Education, Computer Education, Spelling, and Handwriting.  First grade is truly a busy year!
