Welcome to St. Justin Martyr Kindergarten!
The kindergarten curriculum at St. Justin Martyr Parish School is a balance of fun activities and academics.
In St. Justin's kindergarten classroom we have religion everyday. We start the year off by learning that God made the world and everything in it, and move on to cover concepts such as how to get along with others, Advent and Lent, and we even learn "The Lord's Prayer" and "Hail Mary" prayers.
We have reading everyday. Whether the students are merely practicing the sounds of letters or reading books, the kids always have fun with improving their reading skills. We start the year off by learning/ reviewing the sounds of the alphabet. By the end of the year, all students are reading simple books.
We also have writing everyday. At the beginning of the year we start with learning how to correctly form letters and numbers and we gradually move on to writing words and basic sentences.
We have math four days a week. We start with basic patterns and then move onto telling time to the hour and counting coins. By the end of the year the students are even able to do basic addition and subtraction.
We have social studies and science twice a week. In social studies we learn about neighborhoods and communities, holidays and seasons, and even about life on a farm. In science we learn the difference between living and non-living things, parts of plants and basic concepts of matter.
In addition to the academic subjects we have "specials classes" as well. The students have P.E. (physical education) twice a week, and computers, music and art once a week.
When it comes to discipline, I have several different methods that I use. I use the ever popular time-out system both in the classroom and at recess. I also have a positive rewards system in which I give tickets to students for good behavior. At the end of each week the students can use their tickets as money to buy things from our treasure chest.
We also have a "buddy system" in place. At the beginning of the year each kindergartner is paired up with a sixth grade buddy. We attend mass with our buddies once a month, as well as meet with them for fun crafts and activities.
